One of the things I’m working to change in our company is how we deal with problems. Right now, the default is to talk about the problem — sometimes endlessly. And what happens when that’s the focus? Emotions get stirred up. People get frustrated. We overanalyze. There’s too much talk and too little action.
The more you ruminate on a problem, the bigger it gets. Focusing on it too long drains energy and gives off a negative vibe — like slipping into victim mode.
So I think the better approach would be to hear the problem and immediately work on a solution. Just take action! Less talk, more action please!
There’s a video of Jocko Willink, a former Navy SEAL who led a SEAL platoon, where he explains how he handles problems. His response?
“GOOD.”
Mission good canceled? GOOD — we can focus on our other one.
Unexpected problems? GOOD – we have the opportunity to figure out a solution.
Jocko wasn’t dealing with office drama — he was leading SEALs in life-or-death missions. And even then, his reflex was: “GOOD.” Learn from it. Respond. Act.
That’s the kind of culture we need in our company.
Problem? GOOD. Now take action.
